Gaia led her troops further south, scouting around the valleys and ridges for the next hour. She was sure that Renee and Lucy had slipped away but had no idea how or where they had gone. She assumed that they would head to Old Blue at some point, so she made sure to avoid that area entirely.

She had only half her mind on the chase, the rest was trying to process what had just happened. Gaia had left the compound with Clio at dawn and it had taken them most of the next five hours to reach the outer edge of Darwin. They had flown non-stop and at full speed. She did not know the faerie that accompanied them and Clio did not introduce her. She was a drab looking creature with dull rust coloured wings. She did not speak the entire journey and as they drew closer to the city they had to slow down to accommodate the faerie’s weariness.

‘We will have time to rest once the task is complete. We will head back tomorrow at a slower pace,’ Clio had informed them both.

‘You are to wait here,’ she said directing Gaia to a shady tree.

Clio and the rusty faerie continued on toward the city and were soon out of sight.

Half an hour later, Clio returned, alone.

‘We will rest here in the branches,’ she said choosing a hollow filled with decaying leaves for her bed.

Gaia propped herself in a sitting position and half-dozed. She could sleep lightly when she needed to and awaken instantly if her super-tuned senses told her there was danger. She had been born to be a guard.

They had rested for less than an hour when Clio woke with a start. Gaia was fully awake in an instant.

‘What is wrong your majesty?’

‘Lucy is escaping!’

Gaia saw the ring on Clio’s finger glowing; Clio was communicating with someone back at the compound. There was nothing Gaia could do from here, but thankfully, Clio was powerless too. Renee had a chance; it would take Clio and Gaia hours to get home.

‘Come with me, quickly,’ Clio ordered, and Gaia was surprised to find them heading toward the city. They should be heading in the opposite direction if they were heading home. Were they going to get the other faerie first?

They flew until they reached a park in the centre of Darwin. Amongst a grove of trees was a boulder, it had a bronze plaque commemorating a past event. Clio guided Gaia to the rear of the stone and they landed in the grass, still in their tiny faerie form.

At faerie height, there was a circle carved into the stone, no bigger than a plate in a children’s tea set. The centre was carved with intricate intertwining patterns.

Clio grasped her hand.

‘Do not let go of my hand or this spell will kill you.’

Gaia stared at her in astonishment. Clio did not usually perform spells, she had others to do them for her and she had never heard of her performing a dangerous one.
